Catastrophic library cuts hit hard-copy journals
As we prophesised almost a year ago, cuts in library budgets have continued. Just recently, the rate of decline appears to have increased dramatically: in the last few weeks we have been receiving news from several sources that many institutions worldwide are now drastically cutting their subscriptions to hard-copy Earth Science periodicals. No doubt this is also true for many other scientific fields.The message to academics is that the ability of hard-copy publication to disseminate their work properly is now rapidly weakening.
Electronic publication is clearly the way forward, and the policies of several major publishing houses towards the Internet appear to have been supremely ill-judged.
